THE BRIEF

Give the terrace a reason to hold the evening.

The homeowners wanted a dining area that felt settled without blocking the garden beyond. The structure needed to be warm, robust, and light enough to let the planting remain visible.

PROJECT NOTE

The cedar was left to age naturally, so the structure will sit more quietly in the garden over time.

THE RESPONSE

A timber frame that draws people outside.

01 · Mark the room

We set out the dining area so the pergola would frame the garden rather than block it.

CHALLENGE / RESULT

The original patio was broad but exposed, with little definition between the house and the lawn. We set a precise cedar structure over the dining zone, adjusted the paving, and built planting into the edges. The terrace now feels sheltered, while the garden stays open around it.

CLIENT NOTE

It changed how we use the garden. Dinner outside has become the normal choice whenever the weather allows.

THE OUTCOME

The new terrace is an outdoor room that works for weekday suppers, weekend gatherings, and quiet time at the end of the day.
